Why does decreasing entropy require energy?

Energy always increases entropy.

Creating order is not spontaneous, energy must be invested to organize molecules into larger structures.

Creating order lowers the system’s entropy because it concentrates matter and energy into specific, less probable arrangements. Since systems naturally tend toward more probable, more disordered states, you must do work to push them into a structured state. The energy you invest provides the necessary drive to overcome random motion and entropic pressures that favor dispersion. Importantly, this doesn’t violate the second law because the energy input often causes a larger entropy increase in the surroundings (for example, heat released or waste products spreading out), so the total entropy of the universe still rises.

Entropy is independent of energy input.

Entropy decreases spontaneously with time.
